Dear CanCham Members and Friends,
Today’s question – what does CanCham’s strategy today have in common with https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vlx6gQWfjp0? The fact is, some members don’t have a clue what other members do, which begs the question, how do your potential clients find out about you? This is something we are working on. Perhaps our theme for the year should be “getting to know you”. The same applies to our friends in Canada who wish to expand their business to this part of the world. We are looking for ways to attract them to this region too.
The current state of emergency due to COVID-19 is scheduled to end on April 6th. However, there are indications that it could be extended. All in-person CanCham events have been postponed until further notice due to the COVID-19 situation in Latvia and will be rescheduled once we are allowed to meet. Group work in ZOOM using teleconferencing continues.
Isolation and quarantine during the COVID-19 period: Travellers returning for abroad, those designated as contact persons and those who have tested positive for COVID-19 should be separated from others in order to prevent the spread, and may not know how to do this. The CanCham is aware of accommodation facilities (hotels, guest houses) that are available for Isolation and quarantine purposes. In particular circumstances, financial assistance may be available. For infomation, please contact the head of our Health & Leisure Group, Una Brűna at una.bruna@cancham.lv. Stay safe!

Current activity
We have created a description with links to the web and social media sites used by the CanCham for communication. Please see https://cancham.lv/about-cancham/web-links. We will also be providing monthly ZOOM training seminars with the title “Discover CanCham” - a tour through CanCham web and social media sites to discover how members and friends can use these sites for information that could benefit their business activities.
In the absence of in-person events, the CanCham has concentrated on reorganizing the way we work.
Bi-weekly ZOOM meetings take place between all the group leaders and their committees. The schedule is posted in https://cancham.lv/events. Members who are not in a committee are welcome to attend by registering through the web site.
We have noted that communication is an issue since many people do not read e-mails, perhaps because of information overload. However, we are committed to helping our members with business related issues and have concluded that we need the personal touch. With this in mind, we have arranged that each member will be contacted by a group committee member once a month to ensure that they optimize their membership benefits through advertising their organizations and acquiring assistance where appropriate.
We have also started a program of reaching out to Canadian companies and organizations that may wish to do business with this region. More on this in the upcoming months.
New Members
We welcome the following as a new member that has joined the CanCham since the last update:
  • 13.12.2020 Martins Saulis joins the CanCham as a Business member.
We are pleased to announce that the CanCham has entered into a cooperation agreement with Latvia Resort Association (Latvijas kűrortpilsçtu asociâcija).
DMC System
Please be reminded that the DMC system for business development between Latvia and Canada is available to all members who wish to export goods or services or receive same from Canada. This is explained in http://cancham.lv/dmc/how-dmc-works (updated). Companies interested in exporting and developing strategic partnerships should take note.
“Show & Tell” presentation evenings
This program has currently been suspended because of the current State of Emergency declared by the Government because of the COVID-19 situation, but will continue as soon as the situation improves. In the meantime, we are helping our members develop effective presentations. Please register here if you wish to participate.
We continued to develop the “Show & Tell” meeting concept for the individual groups. The main developments included:
These events allow members and those interested in presenting to the CanCham to provide their presentation to both members and those interested in the particular subject area.
Canadian companies will be invited and encouraged to present themselves via ZOOM as part of the program.
Special Recognition
We wish to recognize those members who advance CanCham’s objectives by having signed up at enhanced membership levels:
Shadow program
The International School of Riga is promoting internships, CAS and other volunteer opportunities for its older students. The CanCham has agreed to support this initiative and has named it “the Shadow program”. As the program develops, students will participate in CanCham in-person and ZOOM events. Member companies who wish to do so can arrange for students to be involved in their companies.
Three students are now involved in this program, one participating in group committee activity and two with the social media task force that is helping the CanCham optimize the use of social media. ISR students will also be helping with filming assignments at our SHOW & Tell events.
