The worldwide leader of The Salvation Army General André Cox will visit Latvia in April 2018 during Latvia’s Centenary. The Salvation Army is an international charitable organisation that is present in 128 countries with more than 14,000 churches (Corps, Outposts) and over 11,500 social centres and institutions, which include: 556 Community day care centres, 235 Children's homes, 216 Residential addiction dependency programmes, 180 Homes for elderly persons, 32 Maternity hospitals, 29 General hospitals and many more. History of Salvation Army in Latvia starts in 1923 when it was initially established in Jelgava. The work flourished for 20 years and spread over the country, starting churches and saving lives through its social work. In 1990 The Salvation Army was allowed to open up official work in Latvia again. Today in Latvia the organization has: 23 Officers (church leaders) and 396 members; 14 churches, 7 social institutions; 11 soup kitchens and more. This will be a rare opportunity to hear about the global operation of The Salvation Army from The General André Cox and about the activities of the “Pestîðanas armija” in Latvia from Major Robert Tuftström, Regional Commander of the Latvian Region. Preference will be given to paid guests. Unpaid registrations may be cancelled should the venue be fully booked.
