30.12.2024 Report on CanCham attendance at Canada-Latvia Parliamentary Friendship Group in Ottawa
30.12.2024

Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Latvia
Ottawa, December 16, 2024
Report

On December 16, it was a pleasure and honour to attend the first official meeting of the newly formed Canada-Latvia Parliamentary Friendship Group. The Chair of the group is The Honourable Senator Rebecca Patterson. The Ambassador of Latvia, Kaspars Ozoliņš spoke of Latvian government priorities. This group creates the potential of increased collaboration between Canada and Latvia.

An overview of both Latvian and Canadian current governmental affairs, and military priorities, were presented.

An objective of the meeting was to agree to a constitution for the group. This was postponed due to the fact that historic political events were unfolding in Ottawa, and MPs were expected in other meetings. The history being made that morning was the resignation of Chrystia Freeland as both Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance.

Senator Patterson was very gracious to provide a personal tour of the inner workings of the Senate of Canada, which has been installed in the former Ottawa railway station, a truly grandiose and historic building.

Again, it was an honour for me to attend as the CanCham representative.
